Maré Favela Skatepark

- Maré Favela Complex, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil -

Maré Favela Skatepark is Make Life Skate Life’s newest project. Maré (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) is a vibrant place full of young people with creative energy willing to make a change in their community. At the same time Maré is affected by extreme violence. Gun battles lead to frequent school closures and civilian fatalities are common. In 2018 there were 16 police operations, 27 clashes between armed groups, 10 days with schools and health posts closed due to violence and 24 fatal victims during confrontations.

Skateboarding in Maré helps youth take away their focus from the negative aspects of life in the favela and gives them something positive. Since 2015 Coletivo Skate Maré (CSM) has been actively promoting a culture of peace through skateboarding in the Maré favela complex. CSM currently provides skate classes benefiting 35 children and young people every weekend. The classes are held on a soccer field that is only accessible on weekends. There is the need for a permanent place to extend the classes and reach more youth.

This summer, MLSL are teaming up with CSM and Rio Ramp Design to build Maré Favela Skatepark, an international standard skatepark where children and young people from across different favela communities in Maré can gather safely throughout the year. The skatepark will be constructed next to the soccer field where CSM currently teaches skateboarding, and will attract people from across Rio, Brazil and other countries acting as a bridge between Maré and the rest of the world.

The overall cost for construction of Maré Favela Skatepark is 25 thousand dollars. A partnership between French artist JR and The Skateroom has provided us with initial funding and will lead to further support in the future. However, in order for the skatepark build to happen, we must raise at least 15 thousand dollars - CSM committed to raise 5 thousand dollars and MLSL the remaining amount.

Donate now and join our dream to build a skatepark in Rio de Janeiro’s Maré favela complex. Every donation counts! Leave a comment on the donor wall and your name will be painted on the Maré Favela Skatepark's wall of fame. At the end of this fundraiser on June 30th, we will raffle 10 CSM member t-shirts between all donors. Help us make it happen, everyone involved in this project is 100% volunteer!

If you have experience in skatepark construction and would like to join the Maré Favela Skatepark build crew please send us your application.
