Volunteer at Addis Skatepark, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Make Life Skate Life is looking for a full-time volunteer to establish skate classes at Addis Skatepark.

In April 2016, Make Life Skate Life and Ethiopia Skate constructed Addis Skatepark to provide the youth of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia with a free-of-charge, safe, and accessible place to skate. The 600 m² concrete skatepark was built in three weeks by a team of 60 volunteer skatepark builders from over 20 countries who worked with local youth to teach them about concrete skatepark construction.

As part of the project, we seek to regularly offer skateboarding classes at Addis Skatepark and provide local youth with free of charge loaner boards. Besides giving classes, responsibilities of the volunteer include organizational tasks and maintenance of the skatepark. During the entire time of the internship the volunteer will be supported by enthusiastic local skateboarders. The long-term goal is that the classes will be taken over by local youth.

Following responsibilities will be assumed by the volunteer:

  • Teaching skateboard classes

  • Running the loaner program and loaner sessions

  • Organizing outreach skate sessions

  • Arranging transport to get youth to the skatepark

  • Scheduling skate classes

  • Involving and engaging girls in the skate classes

  • Supporting local youth to assist during skate classes

  • Contacting partner NGO’s and donors

  • Maintaining social media (photography, video-editing, media coverage, …)

  • Keeping a log about every skate class
